The lighthouse has stood here since 1792, being decommissioned in 2013 due to the encroaching sea. The Orfordness Lighthouse Trust fought valiantly to save this iconic landmark by constructing beach shingle protectors which can be seen here, but were defeated by nature. In 2020 the process of dismantling the building began.
